Echols Dorm: Brick Wall By Side Door
Let’s go into the mountains together. Old Rag is a fabulously beautiful 8.8 mile (roundtrip) hike in Shenandoah National Park, and I want to do it with you. The link for the trail is below.
I’m setting the departure time at a fairly late 11:30am. This is because on a Saturday in late summer the trail may be fairly crowded. If we start hiking at 12:30 or 1:00 my hope is that we can escape the main surge of people.
You also may be wondering why I said hike/run. We’ll hike up the way with the famous (and really fun) rock scramble, but on the way down (most of which is on a gently sloping fire access road) we will run. You don’t have to be in stellar cardiovascular help for this since 1) it’s downhill, and 2) we’ll take some breaks, but do be sure that you’ll be comfortable running 4 miles. Since we’ll be running the last bit, I expect the entire hike/view-enjoying/run to last 4-5 hours, meaning we ought to be back in Cville by 6 or 7pm.
What to bring:
– comfortable hiking/running shoes
– food for late lunch/snacks (we can make a quick stop at the grocery store en route to the trailhead)
– day pack
– WATER (2-3L at least)
– camera (optional)
– a spirit of adventure (not optional)
THE FEE IS JUST AN ESTIMATE OF WHAT IT WILL COST TO SPLIT PARKING AT THE TRAILHEAD…. though you also need to bring your own food.
I have a car and can take 4 others with me, but anyone beyond that will be wait listed until a second driver signs up.
DRIVERS: You get wait list priority, gas reimbursed (plus a 50% tip), and my deep thanks!
See you all out there!!
