Echols Dorm: Brick Wall By Side Door
Old Rag
So I’ve done Old Rag couple times, but I can’t say I’ve ever been at the summit for sunset. Weather is looking cold but clear, so it should be a great evening to watch the sunset.
We’ll head out from Echols at 2pm. It’s then about a one hour drive to the trailhead. 2 hours or so of hiking and we should be near the summit. Sunset is expected at 5:43pm. We’ll get back to Echols around 9:30pm, so you can have time to hit bars and parties.
Total mileage is 8 miles. For more detailed details: http://www.hikingupward.com/SNP/OldRag/
We’ll be hiking down in the dark, so you’ll need to bring a headlamp or a flashlight. Pick one up at the Gear Room this Thursday night if you can! After the trip I can collect club headlamps to pass on the Kit Guncheon for his caving trip.
**Please be aware that Old Rag is famous for it’s super cool ~rock scramble~ at the top. This basically means clambering on and up some large-ish boulders, but you won’t need climbing gear or anything**
I’ve got a park pass, but if we have more than just my car there may be a fee of $2 per person to cover the second car.
What to bring:
– 2L Water
– Food (packed dinner, snacks)
– Headlamp and/or Flashlight
– Warm clothes (we’ll be sitting at the top for a little while to enjoy the view so make sure you have enough warm clothes!)
– Park Pass (if you’ve got one)
Club provides
– Headlamp (please try to pick this up at the Gear Room Thursday)
I can drive 5 people, and I can add another car if another driver signs up! Drivers are reimbursed for gas + a 30% tip!
