OVERVIEW

It’s been pretty dang cold so the waterfalls in Whiteoak Canyon (in Shenandoah National Park) should be frozen, making for a spectacularly beautiful hike. We might also see some ice climbers! We’ll hike about 3 miles up and 3 miles back down, for a total of 6 miles. Part of the trail has steep switchbacks, and there likely will be snow and ice around.

Outdoors at UVa provides:

Gas money and a seat in a car if you don’t have one.

You must bring:

A bathing suit (or not?) if you want to join the polar bear club. Otherwise, IT WILL BE FREEZING COLD and it is best to dress in LAYERS so you can peel ‘em off gradually as you warm up. Be safe, stick extra clothes including extra socks in your backpack. Thermal underwear, a hat, gloves, scarf, etc. definitely are necessary. Also bring a liter of water, snacks, chapstick, sun block if you have sensitive skin, and a flashlight. Waterproof boots are best — if there is fresh snow on the trail and you’re wearing sneakers, your feet will get wet and freeze. Finally, please bring lunch in your bag or already in your belly. =)
