Our Officers

Ed Aten

President | he/him

Ed is a dirt-loving, forest creature, born and raised in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. He thinks outdoor sports are really cool, but he identifies as more of a “spot guy.” He believes that nothing compares to walking for a while and finding a really great spot to just sit. Ed loves backpacking, spoon-making, and risk management. He can be found eating flowers, writing silly little poems, and observing the tenets of Leave No Trace(L N T!). His favorite weather is post-rain sunshine and he thinks that the optimal time without a shower is 5-12 days. šŸ™‚

Cam Burke

Vice president & sustainability chair | she/her

an original haiku:

Dampened moss, spring storm.

Kind brown toad chillin on log.

This day is a gift!

Cam likes to vigorously shuffle to edm, go on night hikes, and read in the sun.

.

Max St. Clair

Treasurer | he/him

Max loves backcountry skiing, hiking, mountain biking, and almost all things outdoors (almost, as in donā€™t try to get me to go on a snowshoeing trip). When heā€™s not on a procrastination-induced sleep-deprived homework bender, you can find him camping with Ohill cutlery or indulging in some good ā€˜ol type 2 fun. He believes the harder you search for a descent the more youā€™ll learn to love the climb.

Mitch Lang

Co-gear master & whitewhater advisor | he/him

Mitch is a semi-aquatic seeker of stoke. He is usually found paddling his home river, the James, which, through continued exposure, has rendered him immune to all known diseases. Off the river, Mitch likes to wander about and continues to study the way of the trail. He would love to hop on a path or river with ya and explore the great outdoors!

Renee Erickson

co-gear master & caving advisor | she/her

Renee is always reaching for new heights, or more realistically, stooping to new depths. She spends much of her outdoor time deep underground, exploring the phenomenal web of VA caves. When not masquerading as a muddy little darkness dweller, she can be found hiking, swimming in the coldest water she can find, or attempting to learn new outdoor sports. She is a firm believer in scooby snacks and turkey sandwiches with chipotle mayo.

Anusha Jain

Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) Chair | she/her

Anusha likes to step on crunchy leaves, crunchy water, and crunchy rock. In her dream life Anusha would be in a band that travels the world via dragon or flying bison. She believes Pbjs are the best summit hike food and if she had to pick one fruit it would be pomegranate. A true herbivore, Anusha once had a nightmare about roast beef. You may spot her in her natural habitat attempting to climb random surfaces, frantically cooking up a storm, or nibbling on some berries!

Grace Gray

co-service chair | She/her

A devotee of warm socks and all things squirrel-related, you can usually find Grace utilizing carrots as silverware or attempting cartwheels in enclosed spaces. She has sworn her allegiance to mud as the superior-est substance on Earth and thinks every life pursuit should include squelching in it. She viscerally enjoys trail running or camping on any questionably flat surface and always loves for amigos to join in!!

Emilú Englander Fuentes

CO-Service chair | she/her

Emi loves paddle board yoga, barefoot walks, squishy moss, and polar plunges followed by warm tea. A proud garden gnome, she considers her plants to be her children and is very protective of them. You can usually find Emi sipping on a matcha or hiding under rocks searching for cute bugs.

owen himmel

sustainability chair | he/him

Fonder than most of stones, blue belt hacky sack practitioner, and pear enjoyer, Owen looks forward to any time outside on any kind of trip. Generally pursuing a state of laminar flow and unorthodox snacks, he hopes to share in the fun of all.

JadE Alvarez

Pbr Chair | SHE/HER

Jade can most likely be found at any given moment by the river somewhere hopefully getting a nice chacos and pfd tan, or possibly at Starbucks fueling up on her third coffee of the day. As an aspiring plant mom she is currently attempting to grow a forest of potted plants in the window of her dorm room which could possibly lead to many plant casualties. When she’s not tending to her plants, she’s probably out biking, hiking, paddling, or going on whatever adventure her friends decided on for the day.

Melu Tershark

webmaster & Climbing advisor | they/them

Likes: getting lost, the color yellow, looking at 4-leaf clovers
Dislikes: shoes, beds, showering

This melusive specimen can usually be found lurking in suspicious bodies of water, touching rocks, or moseying around on foot-powered transportation. Other hobbies include painting, reading, and exploring new types of movement. They believe that life should be full of frolicking and unanswered questions, and sometimes wish they were a nonhuman form of life. A skeptic of modernity & enthusiast of "feral" living.

Sarah Dowling

Secretary | She/They

Women want her and rocks fear her. Sarah was voted ā€œmost granolaā€ by her high school graduating class and still believes it to be her greatest accomplishment. She enjoys touching slugs and hurling insults at mosquitoes, and she will happily explain the plot of the entire Twilight saga to anyone who finds themself on the trail with her. When in the outdoors, Sarah can almost always be found with a handy bag of craisins and her favorite pair of Spiderman sunglasses as she tackles whatever her sport of the day may be. She loves wool socks but hates toenails, and she believes that the best adventures are the ones that donā€™t go perfectly to plan. In her free time, Sarah enjoys being steezy as hell.

Sujith panchumarthy

New Member liasion | he/him

Catch Sujith on his weekly *required climbing only* O-Hill mountain biking trips cause what’s better than sharing the love with others! And yes, he’s written it in stone here to hold himself accountable (shame him if he fails to do so). Just like everyone else, find him on a random hike cause who doesn’t love chatting & grubbing with friends on the road to a rewarding view? Bonus points if there's a sunset involved. He loves breaking out of his comfort zone, evidenced by the fact he went skydiving to overcome his fear of heights, so shoot him any of your crazy ideas.

Max Titov

biking advisor | he/him

Most likely to be found exploring the blue ridge mountains, frantically repairing the club bike fleet, praying for a good snow year, or stacking runk plates post ride. Max is a firm believer that going on a bike ride is the solution to most problems in life. Feeling tired? Bike ride. Have an exam to study for? Bike ride. Feeling down? Bike ride. When he’s not biking, he’s likely to be cooking up a storm, napping through his classes, or on some other outdoorsy adventure.

Shay Utzinger

Officer | She/Her

Very pro summit hugs and getting cozy on mountaintops with other lovely earth loving folk. Probably out hiking, skiing, climbing or biking - all while thinking about the bangin’ dinner she's going to make as soon as she gets home. Fueled by: Sweetarts.
.

Marion Donald

OFFICEr | She/her

Likely running through the trails, day-dreaming about powder days, chasing big waves on the river, climbing large rocks or occasionally painting in the woods. Endlessly stoked on yummy food and especially passionate about Idaho potatoes and the prospect of post-adventure ice cream šŸ™‚

Will Lankford

Officer | he/him

Awaiting Will's bio. If you see him, give him a hard time!!!!

Carson hopwood

Officer | they/them

Up at absurdly early hours of the morning, Carson can often be found jaunting around the trails in Charlottesville and elsewhere. They are a big fan of walking words, breakfast burritos, and the concept of cowboys, and at any given time, roughly 70% of their mental capacity is taken up by thinking about ultra/trail running and long-distance backpacking. A lover of the 8pm bedtime and a strong believer in the power of early 2010s pop music, Carson is excited to further explore the trails (and hopefully the waters and the rocks if they actually branch out in their outdoor activities like they keep saying they will) with you!

parker sims

Officer | she/her

Parker is a lover of rivers, ferns, and moss who has not yet mastered the art of carrying two crash pads on a bike. Some of her top priorities are eating spinach and tomatoes and looking at mountains. She is a Professional Camp Counselor and was supposed to sleep under a bat net all summer, but she didn’t get rabies so it’s fine. Parker has a complicated relationship with worms and wants you to go climbing with her.

Allie Shellhammer

Officer | she/her

Allie is a nature loving adventure seeking gremlin who loves all things outdoors! This makes sense since she hails from the outdoorsy state of Colorado! Although she loves hiking, backpacking, climbing, stargazing, birding, rafting and all above ground adventures, she spends most of her time underground crawling through tight squeezes, fangirling over bats and climbing vertical mud slides definitely not made for a 5' short queen. She hopes to see you all on a rad ODC adventure soon or on a spontaneous trip out West!

Susannah Allen

Officer | she/her

Susannah has the ultimate superpower of never, ever getting bitten by bugs, but a weakness of lighting matches. So, no fire is needed to keep the bugs away from her on a summer night. Outside of struggling to make fires, Susannah can be found on her mountain bike doing laps at Ohill, paddle boarding at Ragged, or straight lining down the mountain at Snowshoe. She believes that school is an odd social construct and that you can learn math from the trees just as easily as you can from professors. Crashing bikes, falling in the water, and tripping over her own skis are all the learning that she claims she needs.

John Woodward

Officer | he/him

John is a fan of outdoor exploration, bonus points for places that are dangerous, difficult, or downright unpleasant to access. He documents these journeys in the rivers, caves, sewers, or deep into the wilderness with a camera that he values more than his own safety. John specializes in any whitewater-based activity but enjoys all kinds of other outdoor sports and will gladly try anything new.

Charlotte Maxwell

Officer | she/her

Skills: getting lost in nature, finding 4-leaf clovers, making pbj masterpieces, serving steez
Struggles: pulling all-dayers, lactose intolerance, using pocket lighters

Charlotte is often found lying in a delicious patch of grass living carelessly outside instead of doing the readings for her classes. She loves her daily vitamin D intake, walking around grounds barefoot, and singing her heart out around a campfire (no matter how out of tune she might be). As a camp counselor guru, she never fails to ask you what your “rose, thorn, and bud” are at the end of a long day. She is also a 5th grader stuck in a 19 y/o’s body: rolling cartwheels, headstands, eating dino nugs, climbing up trees, and dabbing on the haters.‍

Via Miller

Officer | she/her

Via is a forest cryptid who crawled out of a hole somewhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains. She can often be found climbing and hiking, however as a self-proclaimed ‘Jack-of-all-Trades, Master of None’, she’ll join just about any beginner trip that she can cram into her schedule. When she isn’t off in the mountains, she can often be found cooped up in the basement of Olsson coding video games or plotting her next D&D campaign.
