Amoco Gas Station On Fontaine
James River - Richmond
There’s still plenty of water flowing through Richmond, should be some good levels still on Friday. This is a Class IV trip, if you don’t have a combat roll then this trip isn’t for you. If the levels are still above 6 feet, we’ll run the downtown section from Reedy Creek to Mayo Island. If the levels are below 6 feet, we’ll park and play at Z-dam above Pony Pasture. For those who haven’t heard of Z-dam, it’s a fish ladder break in a dam that offers up side surfing, flat spins, cartwheels, and ginormous loops. It’s bounded on both sides by a dam, but is actually quite safe despite it’s spooky proximity to the reversals. As soon as you flip you’re out of the hole, which also lets you make your combat roll bombproof. Essentially this trip is about finding the best wave on the river and sessioning it until our arms fall off. If we get enough rain from thunderstorms, we could go to Goshen Pass instead with group consensus.
What to bring: boat, paddle, helmet, skirt, PFD, temperature regulation–I’d recommend a drytop or paddle jacket despite the 73 deg forecast, the water’s still cold. Polyester layers, towel and maybe $ for fast food afterwards.
club provides: boat and gear if needed
