OVERVIEW

It’s been sooo long since I’ve had a free day to kayak, but finally, I have the green light for this Sunday. Come join me on this classic urban whitewater run as the James pours alongside downtown Richmond. With the recent widespread rain and the colder temps, I expect the water table to be on its way up as it tends to do in the winter, and the river level to be right around 4 feet; normally a fine level for experienced beginners led by a responsible shepherd, but the cold water and air temps can bump the danger level up a notch making this a run for intermediates on up. Please do NOT sign up unless you have plenty of white water kayak experience in at least class 3 rapids, have a solid flat water roll, and have an affinity for being cold. Call or email me with questions regarding your qualifications and/or river info; 962-9737 or dclark@virginia.edu. For more info on this river section check out: http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River_detail_id_1952_

After the run we’ll stop at one of my favorite post-adventure hang out joints: Legends (a brew pub).

This trip may be canceled by incredibly foul weather or if the river drops to a level below what I deem worth the drive to it.

The Club provides: Boats and gear (including dry tops, wetsuits, a limited selection of gloves and booties), boat transport.

You should bring your boat and gear, wear several warm non-cotton layers, a towel, warm clothes for after, water, snacks, pack a lunch and/or bring money for Legends (and ID if you want one of their incredible brews).
