OVERVIEW

While we can’t actually explore a mine on mountain bikes, we can do a sweet ride to an abandoned mine/camp/site/town or something like that. We have a number of options for this ride, but we’ll most likely do a 14-16 mile out and back number, although we’ll have the ability to end it halfway or completely scrap it early on and turn it into some form of a loop. There are supposed to be views along this so-called Cunard-Kaymoor Trail and we can ditch our bikes at the turn around and go check out the relics of past mining ventures. I’m opening this for all skill levels of bikers, but you must be comfortable riding a bike in general, reasonably aerobically inclined, and be down for any possible punishment. The trail looks like it contours along the gorge, so I would expect that any climbs won’t be too intense, but I’m not making any promises. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me (mtc3wf). Also, to go on this trip, you have to be signed up for and attending David Clark’s overall NRG Extra-va-gan-za trip, so make sure that’s the case.

For reference, here’s a map of sorts: http://www.newriverwv.com/Map-Kaymoor-Trail-FS.php
The trail of interest is the long teal trail. This is fortunate because we all know that teal is the fastest color. Idea is to start at one end, do it, and then ride it back. Start time is flexible, and the end time really depends on how we ride and what else we end up doing.

Make sure to bring appropriate clothing (member, no long pants) and sturdy, protective shoes of some sort. You’ll also need a water vessel—camelbak or sport-sized water bottles will work (not your standard nalgene) and bring some extra snackage.

Club provides: Bikes and helmets if you need them. All other necessary bike-related items.

You provide: WATER (at least two liters), Snacks, Ability to scoff at hardship
