OVERVIEW

Not able to go to the NRGE? Here’s somethin’ local for ya.

Community hike with local Sierra Club.

Includes a very fun 1-mile boulder-hopping section, to a mountain summit’s spectacular 360-degree views.

Old Rag Mountain, Shenandoah National Park. We will enter the circuit from a little-known back door, which ends up making the whole experience be much better than the usual.

9.3-mile circuit
3,100 feet elevation gain
Hike pace 3.5 to 4.0 out of 5 (a bit above average hiker speed, on both uphills and downhills. For those of you who have hiked with me before, it’ll be that same pace).

This adventure starts out with everyone waitlisted, and then as drivers sign up, folks will get off the wait list. Last two hikes I posted had ~40 people wanting in; ultimately, between drivers in and droppers out, everyone got into the first hike and all but three got into the second hike. Please keep this in mind if you consider making alternative plans.

WITHDRAW/CANCEL-PARTICIPATION DEADLINE is the same as the signup deadline for every club adventure unless otherwise noted. If you are on the wait list and make other plans, please withdraw ONLINE (otherwise if you get off the wait list last-minute and don’t show up, and someone else could have gone in your spot, that’s a problem).

Drivers needed and greatly appreciated (~90 miles total). Drivers please arrive with completely full tank of gas; you’ll score a filled-up tank up on return plus a 30% TIP. The more drivers, the bigger we can grow the size of this trip to let in any waitlistees. Thanks!

Wear non-cotton clothes, and pack: __ breakfast in-stomach or in-hand, __ GLOVES WITH GOOD GRIP else some of you will get your hands scraped up / cut on the boulder-hopping section, __ consider long pants for the same scrape/cut reason, __ multiple layers of clothes to put on / peel off as needed, __ 2-3 L water, __ lunch, __ snacks, __ meds, __ extra corrective lenses if applicable, __ rain gear, __ whistle, __ flashlight / headlamp, __ SNPark pass if have, __ hike poles? (you’ll want to collapse & strap them to your pack during the boulder-hopping section) __ camera? __ sunscreen? __ sun glasses? __ bug spray? __ t.p. & baggie?
Everyone will be required to sign a liability waiver.
Sorry Fido, doggies not allowed on one of the trails we’ll be hiking.

Meeting / departure location is downtown at a parking lot (not garage) on the corner of Market St. and 7th St. NE.
>> FREE TROLLEY: Hop on the one that leaves the UVA chapel at 9:30am. Get off at the Market Street Garage. Walk about a block further to the traffic light with 7th St. NE; the parking lot that’s on the left is where we’re meeting.
>> BIKE: There’s a covered bike rack in the Market Street Garage. Then follow the directions above.
>> WALK: GPS users: plug in 701 East Market Street, Cville (that’s the approximate address of the parking lot where we’ll meet).
