Aquatic & Fitness Center, Whitehead Road, Charlottesville, VA, USA
THIS IS THE FINAL AFC ROLL SESSION OF THE SEMESTER. Also, it’s my last one because I’m graduating… AND we have a new boat. What an epic and emotional combo. You don’t want to miss it.
Come learn how to roll, practice your roll, or learn some crazy new tricks! Here’s a little video JOHN put together on what to expect from a pool session and some things to learn (youtube.com/watch?v=Gz-QZ2jAlH4).
IF ADDED TO THIS TRIP you must follow the directions in the followup email sent and sign up for this program via UVA Outdoor Adventure. Failure to do so will result in inability to participate.
ODC, in collaboration with UVA Outdoor Adventure, has been allotted time and pool space to practice our whitewater kayaking skills! Pool sessions like these are great for any level of kayaker, whether you’ve never been in a boat before and want to learn some strokes, you’re looking to work on your kayak roll, or if you’re wanting to learn and practice some playboating skills.
These pool sessions will take place at the AFC main pool on Tuesday nights from 8 to 10pm. Please be on the pool deck ready to paddle by 8. Outdoor Adventure staff (your trip leaders) will aim to arrive by 7:45 to get the pool open by 8:00. You are welcome to enter the main entrance of the AFC and head down to the pool, or if you have your own boat/gear, enter through the AFC loading dock doors off of Gerald Drive. Our space is at the left end of the pool (nearest the hot tub) so come on over and meet the trip leaders. We’ll get you set with any gear you need and get you started with instruction if you’d like or just set you free for open practice. All participants are required to demonstrate a roll/wet exit/t-rescue if wanting to wear a skirt during open practice. We will aim to be out of the water by 9:45 at the latest and must be out of the AFC by 10pm.
What to bring:
Swimsuit/clothes that you feel cool swimming in
Towel and change of clothes for after
Water
optional: goggles and earplugs / your own nose plugs
optional: your own pfd, skirt, helmet, paddle, and boat if you have it
WAITLIST POLICY:
If you are on this waitlist you are committed to coming on the trip! Please remove yourself if your plans change. Participants will be selected from the waitlist on the basis of their kayaking experience and attendance record. This policy is a rough guideline and subject to change.
“expert” participants: 2/10 will be selected and will have strong knowledge and practice of the kayak roll.
“experienced” participants: 5/10 will be selected and will have some knowledge and practice of whitewater kayaking skills and/or the kayak roll. These individuals are able to work on their roll and other skills unsupervised. They should be comfortable performing a t-rescue or wet exit.
“beginner” participants: 3/10 will be selected and may have little to no kayaking experience.
Participants who attended the previous session will have lower waitlist priority than those who did not. Participants, especially those at the expert level, willing to instruct or give advice to others will receive priority over others at their level.
Once selected off the waitlist, you will be sent an email with a link to sign up for the UVA outdoor adventure program corresponding to this trip. You MUST sign up and fill out the waiver to attend the session.
Hope to see you there!
