Rivanna Trail, Charlottesville, VA, USA
I don’t know about you, but every time I’ve gone to the Rivanna, I’ve gone, “WOW, this would be so fun to paddleboard!” I finally did it for the first time this spring, and let me tell ya, I was right. SOOO join me (Sarah) and Katie for an epic day of SUPing this Saturday!!
Together, we’ll check out a 4ish mile section of the Rivanna, which has a few class 1-2 rapids scattered throughout. It may be a little boney given that it won’t rain between now and Saturday, but regardless, it should be a fun day of splashing around, chatting, and paddling!
Another driver will be needed, so you’ll get priority off the waitlist! No gas reimbursement because the trip is nearby, but I will give you a heartfelt thank you. Also, the trip capacity is at 4 participants because we’re not certain what shape the paddleboards are in after the summer, but if you have your own paddleboard to bring on the trip, we’ll happily add an extra spot to the trip for you!
The plan:
11am – Meet in the Shrackyard (Shrack backyard, 116 Washington Avenue) and grab paddleboards and life jackets
11:15am – Drive to Riverview Park
11:30am – Set shuttle and inflate paddleboards
12pm – Get on the water
Sometime between 2:30pm and 3pm – Get off the water, pack up paddleboards, grab other car, and head towards Shrack aiming to be back around 3:30pm
What to bring:
– Clothes that you’re okay getting wet! Maybe a swimsuit, maybe shorts and a T-shirt
– Suitable river shoes that will not come off in the water: chacos, keens, sneakers (please not crocs)
– A towel
– A change of clothes if you desire
– Water (and snacks if you want)
– A drybag for your stuff and a carabiner to attach it to the board if you want
I (Sarah) am a Wilderness First Responder and have swiftwater rescue training, but I’m still requiring everyone to be comfortable on a paddle board and a confident swimmer so that we hopefully don’t run into any problems in the first place. Everyone will also be required to at least have a life jacket on their board, if not worn on their body.
