Advanced Kayaking on the New

OVERVIEW

Rejoice! My thesis is done! What better way to celebrate than to spend 2 days paddling the New?

We will leave Friday afternoon and camp out at Roger’s (climbers hangout that is close to the put-in). We’ll wake up and set shuttle and get our paddle on. We’ll eat lunch on the river. We’ll then spend another night at Roger’s and do it all again on Sunday. (Sign up if you only want to paddle one day and we’ll see if we can work something out)

It’s supposed to be high 50s this weekend, which means that cold weather gear should still be used, so bring any you have (the club has a good amount — see below).

You must be a solid class IV paddler to go on this trip. The New is a big and very old river, so there’s lots of water and a good number of undercuts. Please email me with questions.

Outdoors at UVA Provides:
Boats, car to ride in, splash jacket, paddling equipment, tent, sleeping bag

You provide:
Clothes that can get wet, sandles/booties, money for food getting there and coming back, $10 to pay for a 2nd car (for shuttle — if need be)
If you do not own your own cold-weather gear, you must bring polypro long underwear and a thin fleece to wear under the splash jacket!
