Blue Ridge Tunnel Trail, East Trailhead, Afton Depot Lane, Afton, VA, USA
Tired of breathtaking views and sweeping panoramas? Then what better way to change it up by hiking in the complete darkness of a historical railroad tunnel?
The Blue Ridge Tunnel was the longest railroad tunnel in the United States when it was built in the 1800s. Now, it’s been recently reopened as a 4.5-mile out-and-back trail that goes through its full length with bits of info along the way. This will be a flat, beginner-friendly trail so it’s a chill way to start your day and learn a little history.
Bring a headlamp! The tunnel has no lighting. We can hike some of it without a light though to spice things up.
