Alternative Foxfield – Service Trip to Gallastar Farms

OVERVIEW

Foxfield is fun and all but don’t you wanna see an actual horse? And play with pigs? And dogs that look like polar bears? If your answer was yes to any of those questions, come with me to Gallastar Farms for a day of service, furry friends, and good company!!

Ranger’s Refuge at Gallastar Farms is a farm animal rescue out in Esmont that houses over 100 potbelly pigs, a handful of cows, a few horses, a nice lil squad of goats, and four super fluffy and friendly Italian sheep dogs that guard the animals. I’ve volunteered here throughout my time at UVA and it is truly a gem in the community!

Depending on how many people come out, we’ll be doing a variety of different farm chores ranging from general maintenance/cleaning to putting up fences for new pastures and MAYBE even building a trail on the property! The more hands the better, there will be a job for everyone who comes 🙂 **Be prepared to get dirty and smell like a farm animal**

Because this is a service trip, we will be reimbursed $5/person for food! The farm is conveniently located near Dr. Ho’s Pizza which is honestly life-changing, so when we’re done we can stop there and get some GOOD EATS!!!

~Logistics~
10:00 AM Depart Echols
10:45 AM Arrive at the Farm
10:45 AM – 1:45 PM Put in some hard work/play with farm animals/soak up the sun
2:10 PM Dr. Ho’s >:)
3:30/4:00ish back in Cville!

You Bring:
– CLOSED TOED SHOES THAT CAN GET DIRTY (hiking boots, rain boots, or old sneakers)!!! **Sadly no Chacos will be permitted as we will be working in close proximity to very large animals**
– Weather appropriate clothing (shorts are okay but I recommend long pants in case it’s buggy)
– 1L+ Water
– Bug spray and sunscreen

**DRIVERS NEEDED** I can only bring 4 other people unless I get more drivers! As always, gas is reimbursed and you’ll get a 50% tip!
