OVERVIEW

American Canoe Association National Championship!
A group of undergraduate and graduate students will be travelling down to Dillsboro, NC on the Tuckaseegee River to represent UVA and the Outdoors Club at the 2014 Collegiate Race!

Official race page: http://www.americancanoe.org/?page=Collegiate_Nationals

We will be driving down Friday evening, the 28th, (the time we leave will depend on when the majority of people finish up with classes). It’s about a 7 hour drive so we want to get an early start. Our campsite is called Moonshine Creek Campground http://www.moonshinecreek.com/ – this is where all of the other schools will be staying as well, should be fun! Races begin at 9:30am Saturday morning. The race is a timed paddle down a 5 mile long stretch of river, all of which is class I/II and beginner friendly. There are men’s and women’s kayak divisions, as well as a canoeing division and relay race. Even though we haven’t been training in canoes, if you have experience and are interested please let me know in your comment section and we can try to work something out. Sunday morning there is also a BIC SUP One Design Challenge (http://www.bicsuponedesign.com/) which is a new, standup paddleboard event that we could take part in too. The Awards ceremony is at 11:00AM, so we will leave right after back to Charlottesville.

If you have been coming to my training sessions and know how to wet exit and T-rescue you should sign up for this trip! If you haven’t worked with me directly, but have experience and want to join (or have been to a beginner clinic with Mike or Dave), feel free to email me. The more people we get to represent UVA the better!

We will need as many drivers who have racks as possible, and remember that the club will pay for $150 of gas. The rest we will split up amongst attendees (800 mile round trip should equal about $150, but toting boats tends to lower gas mileage and the difference could probably be covered with $10 each) The other cost will come from the $25 registration fee for the race. Plan on eating out for meals, although if people are interested we could all chip in to cook some group food at the campsite, more details to come!

I’m posting this trip early, because we will have to register online by March 27th with our official roster. I’m setting the sign up deadline to the 26th for that reason, so please be sure you can commit by that date!

TIMES: Leave Cville around 12PM on Friday March 28th, return around 7PM on Sunday the 30th.

WHAT TO BRING: Snacks, two full water bottles, money for food, clothes for 2 days on the river, changes of clothes for after (including WARM layers, as the nights may be chilly), sleeping bag, tent if you have one

THE CLUB PROVIDES: Kayaks, paddles, any other paddling gear- Please indicate when you sign up if you will need to use the club’s gear. Tents/camping gear if needed. Gas $$ is provided for drivers.
