Let’s do another 14 miles on the Appalachian Trail this weekend. We’ll start at Rockfish Gap, and hike up up up to Humpback Mountain. To give you a better idea of the topography:
-Miles 1-5: relatively flat
-Miles 5-7: 500 foot climb
-Miles 7-8: relatively flat
-Miles 8-11: steep 2000 foot climb
-Miles 11-14: flat or downhill
I expect it’ll take 90 minutes to drop the two cars off, so if we meet at 9:00AM, we should be on the trail by 10:30AM. We’ll hike a faster pace, so I hope to be done hiking by 5:30PM and at UVA by 6:30PM.
As far as logistics:
1) I know we’re only going 14 miles, but we’re going to keep a quicker pace, and by the end of the day, we’ll have hiked 3000 feet uphill. For this reason, I’d discourage you from signing up for this hike if you have no idea what it’s like to hike up 3000 feet in 1 day.
2) Bring food to energize yourself during the day (high in calories, fat, and protein). To give you an idea, I might bring Poptarts, a Clif bar, beef jerky, M&Ms, and a sandwich. And of course, bring lots of water (2-3 liters).
3) We need at least 2 cars (for the start and end point), so drivers will get priority off the waiting list. (You will be reimbursed for gas.) I may expand the trip if we have enough drivers and interest.
