Echols Dorm: Brick Wall By Side Door
West Virginia
Let’s go!
Come out for a relaxing weekend in the woods, and catch the last of the lovely autumn leaves. Good food, good people, and great views to be had! Be aware that it will get very cold at night in the mountains (probably around 30 degrees), but hopefully the weather we’re having now during the day will continue for the next week! That said – be very meticulous with your packing list, and be sure to pack layers-layers-layers! Beginners and experienced folks are welcome. You do not have to have any backpacking experience to come – just be aware of the fact that you need to be physically fit enough to hike at least 12 miles a day (probably the upper limit of our hiking) with a 40 pound pack. I love teaching people the ropes of backpacking – so join me! The club will provide you with any gear you may need. You’re on your own for clothing. We’ll most likely be going to Dolly Sods (South, as opposed to the trip in October which was in the North end of the wilderness area) or Cranberry Wilderness in West Virginia.
You need: Backpack, Pack-cover, Sleeping Bag/Pad (15 degrees should be the upper limit of your bags comfort rating for this trip; the club has -20, 0, and 15 degree bags), Headlamp, Bowl/mug/fork/spoon/spork, knife, boots or sturdy hiking shoes (tennis shoes not recommended, but we can talk about it if this is your only option), extra shoes for camp (chacos? crocs?), wool socks (2 pairs), underwear (this is up to you), long underwear (tops and bottoms), gloves, hat, short-sleeve shirt, shorts, pants, fleece, jacket, rainshell, rainpants if you have them, personal items.
Club provides: Gas + seat in a car, Food, any backpacking gear that you don’t have
If the departure time is too early, let me know and we can probably adjust it. I will start the trip at 3 (capacity of my vehicle), and expand it up to 8 as drivers sign up. Let me know if you have any questions – get excited for a weekend in the woods!!!
Cheers,
~Lila
