James River - Warren To Scottsville
Enjoy river running? Ever wanted to canoe the James but didn’t want to shell out $25 to an outfitter? This is your chance. While it may not be the most exciting stretch of water in the world, the 6 miles of the James River between Warren and Scottsville provide beautiful scenery and a little class I (low class II) whitewater action to keep things interesting. Water levels are currently a little on the low side, but are well suitable for river running. The lower water level will help you work on your navigational skills as you will be working harder to avoid rocks in the river.
Weather for Saturday is looking good (73 degrees, mostly sunny). Water temperature is 61 degrees and will be exceptionally clear. It should be a wonderful day to be on the water. It will be a little on the cooler side for water sports. If you get cold easily, bring a long sleeve synthetic layer and you’ll be fine.
The trip is open to anyone who wants to canoe, but is especially good for those who want an introduction to canoeing on a river. If you have ever canoed on a lake, this is a good next step towards understanding the dynamics of moving water and obstacle avoidance.
Participants should bring:
Light fleece or other long sleeve synthetic (Under armor, polypro…)
Towel
Sunscreen
Sunglasses
Water
River shoes (Tevas, Chacos, Keens or old tennis shoes will do.. NO FlIP FLOPS)
Rain shell if you want one, but it really should be nice
Money to grab food in Scottsville at the end of the trip if we decide to
Club provides canoes, paddles, pfd’s (life jackets), gas
I currently have space for myself and nine others on this trip but will need one more driver (whose car can carry five people) in order to run shuttle.
