Beginner Climbing at Slaughter (women + gender expansive affinity trip)

OVERVIEW

Ever wanted to try out bouldering but have been too scared to go alone? I’ve been inspired by Ben, Sarah, and Austin’s trips to Slaughter and have decided to lead my own beginner (indoor) bouldering trip.

This trip will be an affinity trip for women and gender expansive people (including but not limited to transgender and genderqueer individuals). I identify as a woman and have found it really productive to try out new outdoorsy skills within a group that makes me feel safe and comfortable, especially in a sport that can often be intimidating for historically less represented identities. In an open climbing gym, there will inevitably be many other people around, but I think having a group to work on routes with and cheer each other on helps me take on new challenges!

If you have never been to Slaughter before, make sure to register for the orientation video and have your email confirmation before showing up (here’s the link to the website: https://recsports.virginia.edu/climbing-center). This trip is catered toward beginners, and we can go over how the routes work before for any first-timers. There’s already chalk and climbing shoes at Slaughter, so just make sure to bring socks (if you’re borrowing shoes) and your student ID to check in!
