OVERVIEW

High of 63 degrees + World Water Clean Up Day + The Rivanna = Beginner/Intermediate kayaking day trip!

This Saturday, the Rivanna Conservation Society is participating in World Water Clean Up on the Rivanna River and Reservoir. This event is from 10am-1pm, and the current plan (once I hear back officially from the event hosts) is to volunteer for 3 hours and then head to the river and paddle a short, class I/II section.

I’m intending this trip to be for those people who want to learn the basics of whitewater kayaking skills before eventually moving on to more intermediate whitewater. We will be working on skills such as eddy catching, ferrying, and peel outs, as well as the basics of reading whitewater. If you are saying to yourself right now, “I don’t know what the heck an eddy is, but I want to learn how to catch one!” you might be the perfect candidate for this trip. This isn’t a great trip for first time kayakers, but rather those who have been on a river before but haven’t gotten a change to really develop skills.

That being said, I will only be taking 3 beginners (unless another experienced kayaker is willing to assist), & in order to qualify for this trip, you must:

(a) Have attended a previous beginner/intermediate kayaking trip with the club
OR
(b) Be able to successfully roll a kayak in a lake or pool
OR
(c) Email me after signing up with great enthusiasm about learning how to whitewater kayak and convince me to let you on the trip

The club provides:
Kayaks, Paddles, all necessary gear, gas $$

You provide:
Clothes and sturdy shoes that can get dirty to volunteer in (we will be picking up trash on the side of the river), bathing suit with warm/synthetic layers to wear on top for while we are kayaking, a change of clothes for after the river, two water bottles (at least!), snacks and enough food to sustain you through lunch, sunscreen, towel

We will meet at Echols at 9:45am and will hopefully be back before 4pm.

**There is a chance that the level on the Rivanna won’t, in fact, rise up enough to the level we need with the rain we are expected to get on Friday, and in that case I will come up with an alternate, but still fun, agenda**
