Echols Dorm: Brick Wall By Side Door
James River - Glasgow To Snowden (Balcony Falls)
Hopefully this past weeks rain will hold the river level up for a trip to a wonderful section of the James River: Balcony Falls. This section of the James is a great place to learn, rapid running, ferrying, eddy hopping, river reading, or work on improving your skills. We’ll stop at several places on the river to go over those techniques.
This trip is for anyone who has been down a river in a white water kayak. DO NOT sign up unless you have prior river experience. The trip details are subject to change depending on weather and water level. So far everything looks great – Sunday is supposed to be sunny and a cool 65F, and the water level should be between 3 feet; perfect for beginner/intermediates. Email (peter.kayaknut@gmail.com), or call (296-4812 evenings or 242-2417 days) me if you are not sure of your qualifications.
We depart Echols at 9, drive 1.5 hours to the take-out, set shuttle, need to have at least vehicles, put-in at around 11:30, paddle ~1.5 miles to Balcony falls, grab a lunch on a rock above the drop, run the falls and continue down through sweet rapids with several stops, then paddle a stretch of flat water to the take-out.
The Club provides boats, gear, gas for cars and guidance.
Everybody is waitlisted until their paddling experience is approved by me and I have a second vehicle sign up.
