Echols Dorm: Brick Wall By Side Door
James River - Glasgow To Snowden (Balcony Falls)
The leaves should be peaking in the mountains this weekend, and what better way to see from the river? The James at Balcony Falls (Class 3 baby!!) is running at a nice, low, beginner-intermediate style, level. The river cuts through a valley there, offering spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Do NOT sign up unless you have taken the intro class with me or have similar experience. You must know how to paddle, wet exit, and T-rescue. You do not need to know how to roll to be able to go. The water will be cold, so dress warm with plenty of non-cotton layers. The Club has wetsuits for you to wear over your base layer, and under your outer layers. The club also has splash jackets which serve as wind breakers and splash protectors. Good exampls of non-cotton fabrics to wear include fleece, wool, polypropylene, pile, capilene, neoprene, and silk. Your hands and feet may get cold, so bring some wool socks and footwear that can get wet. You should also bring a towel, water, snacks, and some nice warm ‘n fuzzy clothes to change into after the run. We’ll be stopping to eat at Todd’s BBQ on the way home so bring some $$ for food.
The Club will provide boats and gear (including wetsuits and paddle jackets) and boat transport.
**NOTE: If the river levels drops below 3 feet, I’ll have to change the trip to and intermediate trip to the James in Richmond and allow only those with river experience to go.
