Ragged Mountain Nature Area, Reservoir Road, Charlottesville, VA, USA
Do not let your doubts deceive you, for all of these activities (and more) can be enjoyed just a short distance from Grounds, at Ragged: in fact, we can do all of them in one trip! We’ll convene at the Shred Shack at 8:00 sharp to ride bikes to the reservoir; this is a short bike ride that can be readily completed by anyone of basic fitness. We’ll then canoe to the drainage tunnel on the other side of the lake. This tunnel leads under the hill. The tunnel passage (during which you must crouch) isn’t legitimate ‘caving’ — so you don’t need any special gear to do this — but for those of you who are interested in trying caving, this experience might serve as a low-stakes foray into dark spaces. Think of it as Caving Lite. We’ll emerge on the other side, in a mixed-canopy area of quiet forest, which promises some good birding action. (I’m personally hoping to see some warblers, like the one pictured). On the way back, there will be rich opportunities for swimming.
