Blue Ridge Tunnel Trail, Blue Ridge Tunnel Trail, Afton, VA 22920, USA
The Blue Ridge Tunnel is a historic railroad tunnel built in the 1850s right under Afton Mountain. At nearly a mile long, it was once the longest tunnel in the United States. Today, it’s a unique hiking trail where you can actually walk straight through the mountain. The tunnel is completely unlit, so it’s dark, cool, and a little spooky in the best way. That makes bringing a flashlight or a head lamp an important part of the adventure. The trail itself is flat and easy, making it perfect for all skill levels, and the mix of history, nature, and atmosphere makes it unlike any other hike in Virginia.
It takes around two hours to complete the hike, so that should be double for all people regardless of your hiking skills!
the plan is:
meet up at 9:00 and will depart at 9:15.
arrive at 9:45
do the hike and have fun!
we will be back on grounds by 1:30 if not earlier!
I have a car and can take up to 4 people with me, so we need another driver at least. Whoever can drive will be prioritized to get off the waitlist!
After that, the remaining seats will go to people in the order they signed up on the waitlist.
You need to bring:
******All attendees have to bring their own head lamp or a flashlight********
I’ve put in a request for supplies from the club’s gear room, though availability isn’t guaranteed
If you have any extras, feel free to bring them along and let me know
We also need to bring multiple water bottles, good hiking shoes, and some snacks.
Just a heads up, if you don’t have a flashlight, you’ll need to stay on the waitlist unless we end up with some extras to share.
The tunnel gets extremely dark the deeper you go, and it’s impossible to walk safely without a light source
