Youghiogheny River
Let’s head to MD/PA this weekend for some camping and kayaking on the Youghiogheny River. We’ll leave Friday afternoon, returning Saturday evening or Sunday evening (your choice). On Saturday we’ll run the lower Yough, which is class III water. You will need a fairly dependable roll to run this stretch of river, and should have some class II-III kayaking experience (feeling comfortable on the Lower James at a decent level would be a good start). On Sunday, depending on river levels, the availability of other people to paddle with, and the interests of those on the trip, we’ll either run the Lower Yough again, make a trip down the Upper Yough (Class IV with one Class V), or send groups down both stretches.
We will be camping at Dave Kessman’s in Friendsville, MD. It’s about 4 hours away, so we’ll shoot to leave around 3pm on Friday. The club will pay for the driver’s gas, and food, so the trip should be free to you, aside from any restaurant food or snacks you may wish to buy on the way there or back. Trip size may be adjusted depending on drivers and boat space.
We are starting to get into the winter season, and we are headed North for this trip, so it’s important you are prepared accordingly to stay warm on and off the river (kayaking gear and camping gear and clothes).
You provide: kayaking gear if you have it, tent/sleeping bag/stove/camping stuff if you have it, clothes (on and off the river, WARM and NON-COTTON, it will likely be colder there than in Cville), and $$ for food and snacks on the road to and from the Yough.
Club provides: kayaking gear if you need it, camping gear if you need it, food for Saturday and Sunday, and gas $$ up to $150/car.
