Old Rag
***DRIVERS NEEDED – drivers get priority off the waitlist and club reimburses drivers for gas +50% tip $$$***
I have 3 midterms next Monday and Tuesday and I can’t think of any better way to run away from my problems than going to Old Rag on Sunday! Come de-stress with me, enjoy some sweet views, and get a good workout in. I’m sacrificing 3 pristine rams tonight to the rain gods in hopes of good weather Sunday, fingers crossed the sun decides to come out!
Old Rag is Shenandoah’s most popular hike and is a loop of about 9 miles. Keep in mind that the hike isn’t really a walk in the park (well, it is, but not in that way) and that there are some fairly strenuous rock scrambles towards the top. Be prepared to sweat.
The plan at this point is:
8 AM – Depart from the SAB
9:15 AM – Arrive at Old Rag
9:30 AM – Begin our ascent
12:00 PM – If we’re making good progress, we should make it to the peak around noon. If the sun decides to come out the view will be amazing! We’ll stop up there and eat lunch and chat for about 30 minutes, and then start making our way back down.
3:00 PM – Get back to the car and drive back to UVA
4:15 – Arrive back at the SAB
The last couple times I’ve hiked Old Rag we’ve been able to get it done in about 5 hours. That said, the hike can take 7-8 hours depending on our pace and trail conditions. I’d make sure that you don’t have any significant commitments (besides procrastinating) before 7 PM Sunday, just to make sure.
Bring:
