Echols Dorm: Brick Wall By Side Door
George Washington National Forest
DUE TO THE RAIN making the climb up (and back down… in darkness) a bit treacherous and DUE TO THE CLOUDS obscuring our view of the super moon, I have decided to cancel this trip. Note: as I already bought a few gallons worth of cider and a few tins of cocoa mix, I suggest you keep an eye on the listserv for my next stargazing event or sunset hike.
Come join me for the premier stargazing event of the fall semester! [Details are subject to minor changes as we get closer to the event; contact me at jdr5bd@virginia.edu not at my verizon acct]
Moon: The moon will be 14% larger than average with a spooky red color all night. At 9:07 and 10:11pm, the moon will pass through our planet’s shadow (eclipse)
Hike: 1.5 miles each way (1.2k elevation gain), should take about 45 minutes to get to the rock, then a quick scramble to the top.

Transport: 1h10m drive from Echols Dorm mini-wall to the Montebello Fish Hatchery. Drivers get off the waitlist first and are compensated for gas+tip for their effort.
Equipment: 1-2 liters of water, snacks, headlamp, cup for hot cocoa
Timeline: Leaving echols at 6:40pm on Sunday, hiking at 8:00, reaching the top by 8:45pm, reaching Cville around 12:30am.
