Canoe the Mighty James

OVERVIEW

Enjoy river running? Ever wanted to canoe the James but didn’t want to shell out $25 to an outfitter? This is your chance. While it may not be the most exciting stretch of water in the world, the 6 miles of the James River between Warren and Scottsville provide beautiful scenery and a little class I (low class II) whitewater action to keep things interesting. Water levels are currently a little on the low side due to lack of rain. The weather should be beautiful if not a little on the cool side.

The air temperature could be a little cool in the early hours, but the water will be plenty warm. This means we may want to jump in at some point.

The trip will pick up at Bonnycastle Circle, but we may need to return to a different location if football traffic creates a problem. I’ll shoot to be back in plenty of time for the game.

The trip is open to anyone who wants to canoe, but is especially good for those who want an introduction to canoeing. If you have ever canoed on a lake, this is a good next step towards understanding the dynamics of moving water and obstacle avoidance.

Participants should bring:
Bathing Suit
Towel
Sunscreen
Sunglasses
Water
River shoes (Tevas, Chacos, Keens or old tennis shoes will do) NO FLIP FLOPS
A snack if you are the type who is hungry often
Lunch or money to grab food in Scottsville at the end of the trip (we’ll make the call at the end of the trip depending on what’s open and what we have time for)

Club provides canoes, paddles, pfd’s (life jackets), gas

I currently have space for myself and 9 others on this trip but will need two more drivers in order to run shuttle. I will waitlist people till I have enough drivers to accommodate 10 people.
