Children of the Climb (Beginner Climbing at Rivanna Wall)

OVERVIEW

Greetings children of the mother sun,

Is sending it at slaughter starting to lose is spice? Is climbing without a rope just not enough for you anymore? Come learn how to top rope at Charlottesville’s very own Rivanna wall!

Rivanna wall is an old railway trestle that has two climbing routes on it, each about 5.8+. On this trip we’ll go over top rope basics so you don’t have to know how to belay, but some comfort with climbing/heights is highly encouraged since these walls are a little tricky to do if you’ve never climbed before. We will also be biking on the road to get to Rivanna wall with our packs loaded, so please be sure you’re comfortable with riding a bike.

Here’s the plan:
– 9:00am – meet at the shred shack
– 9:15am – leave the shred shack via bike to go to the wall
– 10:15am (ish) – arrive at the wall. The bike ride is 5.8 miles on a combination of road and path riding which Google maps says will take 38 minutes but we’ll leave some extra time just in case we need to break (or brake, haha get it?) for any reason
– 10:30am – hike ~10 minutes along the railroad to get to the wall
– 10:45am – start to climb! this is the part where we teach you how to belay! and you can also jump in the river!
– 2:00pm (ish) – pack up and head back to the shred shack

What to bring
– climbing shoes (can get at the gear room)
– harness (can get at the gear room)
– climbing chalk (can get at the gear room)
– climbing helmet (can get at the gear room)
– snacks and lunch (can’t get at the gear room)
– a towel and clothes you can get wet if you want to jump in the water
– mask
– a bike!

What we bring
– 2 ropes
– quickdraws, belay devices, and other climbing protection
– speaker for music
– our super savvy climbing know how
