Day Hike: North Mountain

OVERVIEW

After posting two movie nights in just a matter of days; I thought it necessary to make up for such sedentary events by offering a grueling day hike. This hike is on the VA/ WVA border. (IT is not to be confused with Great North Mountain) The hike will begin on top of a ridge that has a very exposed east side. We will head south along this ridge for six miles over very rocky and difficult terrain. We will then take a left and follow along a dirt road for only about a half mile. Afterwards we will bushwhack down a path created for some old power lines for 1-2 miles. This will hopefully meet another trail to the left. Which, will then connect with yet another trial- which will return us to our starting point.
This is going to be a very difficult hike. If you have never hiked before, don’t bother signing up. Total miles will be around 15 or 16. THis includes some off-trail hiking! A headlamp is required- for we will most likley hike out in the dark. Make sure to bring lots of water too. I will bring a water filter, so at least have a few bottles that you can fill up along the way.
THe scenery here is truly remarkable- especially this time of year. Also, this place is way off the beaten track. IT is very likely that we will see no other hikers at all. Yet the views and wildlife will be in abundance. However, this is all merely speculation. I have yet to hike this exact trail- but I have seen it from a distance from other trails and it looks impressive.
THings you will need to bring:
-water bottles/bladder
-headlamp or flashlight
-big smile and a ravenous thirst for adventure
-good boots/socks
-some trail food
