Devil’s Marbleyard Rock Scramble Hike

OVERVIEW

All the cool kids are hiking Saturday– on the waitlist for Crockett/Tom’s trip? Join this one! It’s one of my favorite hikes in the Charlottesville vicinity!

The drive to Devil’s Marbleyard will take around 1.5-2 hours, and we’ll start up with a moderately easy 1.5 mile hike through the woods. From there, the mountain opens up into a 100 acre outcrop of granite rock, with rocks ranging in the size of “small pebbles to boulders the size of houses.” The grade is relatively steep, and you’ll have to use your hands to scramble 1/2-mile stretch to the top. The scramble is amazingly fun and provides some spectacular views, so it’s definitely worth the trip. No climbing experience/gear necessary! You don’t need outrageous skill for this trip, but if you’re going to be a whinypants don’t bother, because we’re scrambling for GLORY! This trip is weather dependent! Wet rocks are no good for scrambling.

We will leave at 10am sharp from Echols!

NOTE: the one condition of joining this trip is that everyone WILL BE TAUGHT how to lead a day hike trip. There have been too few day hikes this semester, and they are really not that hard to lead! That’s right, at the gas station I will show everyone how to fill out the simple little gas form and as we scramble I’ll explain how to use the website to set up trips. If you want to be activated as a leader, just email the outdoors officers and lead your own trip. (You can’t get waitlisted on your own trip!)

You provide:
plenty of water for yourself (2 L)
snacks
sturdy shoes
some kind of pack (you’ll need your hands free)
sense of adventure

Club provides:
seat in a car
gas money plus 30% tip for drivers– DRIVERS! bring money to pay for your gas, I will reimburse you with a CHECK at the gas station.
