Echols Dorm: Brick Wall By Side Door
Devil's Marbleyard
So, we’ve had a little difficulty getting this trip off the ground (bad weather, lack of drivers) but I’m going to try one last time! This is an EXCELLENT hike- I did it last year and can’t wait to go back! If it weren’t already cool enough, it’s name is thematic for Halloween!
Devil’s Marbleyard is tucked deep into Arnold’s Valley. Although not very well-known, it is one of the most spectacular hikes in Virginia because it has fun scrambling and great views. The drive to the trailhead will take 1 1/2-2 hours, and we’ll start with an easy 1.5 mile hike through the woods. From there, the mountain opens up into a 100 acre outcrop of granite rock, with rocks ranging in the size of “small pebbles to boulders the size of houses.” The grade is relatively steep, and you’ll have to use your hands to scramble 1/2-mile stretch to the top. I don’t know how much bouldering you can do, but if you have climbing shoes you might want to bring them along.
I have limited the trip to waitlist-only and will add people depending on the number of drivers.
Bring: water, lunch, LAYERS (it’ll be cold), appropriate shoes
Club provides: ride in a car, gas money
