Echols Dorm: Brick Wall By Side Door
Come backpacking and enjoy the last of the fall colors before it gets too cold and before finals season unexpectedly arrives! We’ll be heading out to Dolly Sods in West Virginia. This area is super cool because its a plateau with a landscape that is normally found in Canada. But it’s only three hours away from us instead of 10!
We’ll leave Saturday morning bright and early to drive out to the wild and wonderful West Virginia, hike for about 8.5-9 miles, camp, star gaze, and sing campfire songs, and then have a nice, easy 3 mile hike out the next morning.
As the club doesn’t pay for food anymore, the cost of the trip is $10. This will cover dinner for Saturday night and breakfast for Saturday morning. You should bring lunch for both days, although we will probably be out of the woods in time to stop somewhere for that scrumptious hamburger that you will have been dreaming of the whole time we were in the woods. So either bring lunch for the second day or bring money to buy some lunch.
This trip is open to all skill levels. Aside from the personal gear that you will need (list at end of email) you should bring plenty of layers. It’s going to be a bit chilly at night so please bring enough clothes to stay warm. This is very important!
What you need to bring: backpack*, sleeping bag*, sleeping pad*, headlamp*, at least 2 liters of water, medications, lots of layers (hat and gloves, rain gear just in case), toiletries that you want, sturdy shoes, spoon, bowl or tupperware, and a mug.
*these items can be checked out from the club. You must go to a gear room to get them for yourself.
If you want to look at the route we will be doing, you can look at this map:
We’ll be doing trail 522 to 521, then 524, 526, camping near the 509 junction, then walking out the rest of the way on 526 and 522.
I have space for four more people in my car, so until another driver signs up the trip will be capped at four people other than me. If you can come and can drive, please sign up!
