Downtown Paddlin: Intermediate Kayaking on the James

OVERVIEW

We’ll head down to the James River which flows through my hometown Richmond. This 3.5 mile section boasts Class III-IV whitewater(its really just Class III right now). Please don’t sign up unless you can paddle at least class III rapids (I already have my hands full chasing down Quintin’s boat, flip flops, etc and I’m not exactly a kayaking jedi master myself). We’ll park the cars at the end of the run on E. Franklin Street and try not to get shot on the ride over to the putin at Reedy Creek(I think we’re actually 3rd for murders this year but we took over #1 a couple years back). Hopefully , we’ll get on the water around 2:30-3:00. A little flatwater takes us down to “First Break” and then we’ll paddle through a couple rapids that lead in to “Hollywood” (its named after a cemetery … or is it the other way around???) After “Hollywood”, we’ll continue on to “Pipeline” and takeout between 5:00-6:00. After paddling we’ll go get some food and something to drink at a nearby restaurant and bar – Legends. Then Quintin will drive everyone back to Charlottesville. The club will provide all the gear you need (paddle jackets, boats, paddles, lifejackets, helmets, skirts) and will reimburse for gas. Remember to bring swimwear, a towel, footwear that can get wet, water, any food you want, a change of clothes, and money and ID for afterwards.
