Echols Dorm: Brick Wall By Side Door
Elliot Knob
Elliot Knob Lookout Tower, West Augusta, VA, USA
Yo! This is easily one of my favorite hikes in Virginia, so I’m looking to do it while the weather is nice and before classes pick up too much speed.
Where are we off to? Elliot Knob. Sitting at just shy of 4,500ft, Elliot Knob is one of the highest peaks in Virginia and provides beautiful views of the surrounding area in all directions. To make it even better, there’s a really neat abandoned lookout tower at the summit which gets you an even better vantage point. The hike is 4.25 miles up, so 8.5 miles roundtrip, with an elevation gain of about 2,425. If these numbers don’t mean much to you, it isn’t quite a cakewalk. Depending on the group, I expect the climb to take as long as 2.75 hours, and the descent to take under 2 hours. You will know your abilities better than I do, but I think that anybody that is in good aerobic shape can do this hike comfortably.
