OVERVIEW

Football games not exactly your cup of tea? Maybe just UVA football games in particular aren’t your cup of tea? Would you rather be on top of one of the highest peaks in Virginia chillin’ like a villain with some of the coolest cats around? Then I’ve got just the adventure for you.

Let me summit all up for ya.

This is an intro backpacking trip to Elliot Knob! We will be spending exactly 1 night out and having exactly 6 craptons of fun. Super low stakes, endless opportunities to make mems. There’s a neato burrito lookout tower at the tippy top of the knob that I’m thinking would be prime for a sunset viewing, so we’ll leave from Echols around 3:30pm on Saturday (conveniently at the same time as the home football game), drive about an hour, hike about an hour and a half (4.25 miles), setup camp and eat dinner at our ~spacious~ campsite just below the summit, then bop to the top to watch the sun drop at around 7:30. We’ll hang out, gaze at some stars, maybe gather ’round a campfire and sing some C A M P F I R E S O N G songs, then hit the hay whenever people feel so inclined. If people want to get up to watch the sunrise from the tower at 6:50 Sunday morning, that’s definitely something that can happen, but we’ll probably start heading back down by 8:00am at the latest, get to the car/s before 10:00am, and be back on grounds no later than 11:00am so you’ll have just enough time to do all of the homework and studying that we always put off until the last possible second.

The hike will be about 4.25 miles up with an elevation gain of 2,425ish ft, and the exact same back down Sunday morning, so it’s not exactly a cake walk, but the scenery and views are well worth it. Click here for more on the hike —-> http://www.hikingupward.com/gwnf/elliotknob/

The campsite has tons and tons of trees and is ideal for hammocks and less ideal for tents, but at the end of the day it’s your call.

FOOD: Everybody will be responsible for bringing something for themselves to eat for dinner and breakfast the next morning. I will be bringing my own stove and small pot to cook my meals with and am happy to share if you would like to bring a meal that requires cooking, but please bring extra water or anything else your meal might require to prepare. Bringing no-cook foods like sandwiches is also an option and is highly recommended. A Clif bar and a piece of fruit make for a quick and easy breakfast.
