Elliott Knob Backpacking!

OVERVIEW

Who’s Elliott? And *what* exactly are we climbing? Great questions! We’ll find out together when we climb Elliott’s Knob. What I do know for sure is that we’ll be hiking 10ish miles (4.6 a day) and gaining over 2000 feet of elevation to reach the top, where there’s (allegedly) a 40-ft fire tower with a panoramic view of the Shenandoah. After spending the night there, we’ll retrace our steps and head back to Cville, getting there around 1pm.

While it’s still fine for beginners, this trail can be pretty strenuous, especially with your gear. Check out some past listings and make sure you’re comfortable with the elevation described (hint hint the gravel road mile w/ 800 ft vertical change)!

The plan:
Saturday, 02/08:
1:00 pm: Depart Charlottesville and drive to Falls Hollow Trailhead (1 hr)
1:30 pm: Hike <5 miles along the trail
4-5:00 pm: Set up camp
6:00 pm: Cook dinner, eat
8:00 pm-whenever: Have fun! Climb the tower, sit back, watch the stars

Sunday, 02/09:
8:00 am: Wakey-wakey! Eat.
8:30 am: Pack up
9:00 am: Hike back to the car <5 miles, it’s all downhill (just like my career opportunities)
12:00 pm: Depart for Cville
1:30 pm: We’re done! Stop reading and sign up :]

What to bring:
– Backpack
– Tent
– Sleeping bag and pad
– Hiking shoes
– 2 lunches, 1 breakfast, and snacks
– Bowl & utensils
– Camp entertainment (book, journal, cards, etc.)
– Headlamp
– WATER and LAYERS

What I’ll also bring:
– First aid kit
– Bear bag
– Communal dinner

Drivers are needed and will be prioritized off of the waitlist!
