Echols Dorm: Brick Wall By Side Door
A Sport Crag Near Charlottesville
Trip Requirements: Must be very confident sport leading overhung 5.10d or higher on sight. Must be proficient at lead falling and lead belaying. Must be able to mentally deal with potential ground falls from second and sometimes third bolts where the best clipping stances are not always obvious. Must be able to mentally deal with unmarked loose holds. Must be able to identify and properly deal with potentially unsafe falls (ledges, trees, etc) both as a climber and as a belayer. Must be O.K. with routes that require dynamic, fully committing moves while run out.
Destination: This crag is still semi-secret so I’m not going to name it. However, it is fab-u-lous and one of my favorites. There is/are one 5.9, two or three 5.10c/d’s, lots of 5.11/5.12, a few 5.13’s, and some projects (5.13+/5.14?). The routes are all overhung to the point where top roping is not practical. The approach is rather strenuous. I have heard of significant new route activity there, to the tune of doubling the number of routes, so we might check that out too.
Club provides: Climbing gear, ga$ money.
You provide: Any climbing gear you own (harness, shoes, etc), appropriate clothing, water, pack lunch, sturdy shoes for the approach, camera, kick ass attitude and a shit-eating grin.
