Corner Of Echols Dorm
Corner Of Echols Dorm
Old Rag Parking (Ranger Station), Nethers Road, Etlan, VA, USA
When Sujith and I found out neither of us had done Old Rag, we knew the time was right to lead a trip to one of the most popular hikes on the East Coast. Not to mention this may be the best/last week to see the Fall foliage, lit up by that evening glow, that gives Shenandoah its splendor. Old Rag is a ~9ish mile loop with ~2,400ft in elevation gain and some spunky rock scrambles near the top. It should take about 5.5-6 hours with sunset viewing time (weather permitting). This hike is not incredibly challenging, but use your own personal judgment on if you feel up for it (some of which will be in the dark so bring a headlamp!).
The plan:
1:30 pm – Leave Echols
2:30 pm – Arrive at trailhead
5:00 pm– Arrive at the summit
8:00 pm – Jaunt down back to our cars in the dark and hit the road
9:00-9:30 pm – Arrive back in cville
What to Bring:
– Good hiking shoes
– A headlamp! (Can be checked out from gear room)
– Layers! (It’s going to be chilly especially in the dark)
– WATER (at least 1 liter)
– SNACKS
-Park Pass (if you have one)
