**SUNDAY** Fossil Hunting!

OVERVIEW

THIS ADVENTURE IS NOW OCCURING ON SUNDAY!

Did you dream of finding dinosaur bones as a child? Got an unquenchable interest in the past life around us? Come fossil hunting with me this Saturday! The Appalachian mountains are composed of incredibly old rock that contains compacted marine sediments from its past life as an ocean basin. These ancient rock layers are buried under lots of new rock but get re-exposed through geologic processes (think mountain-building, weathering, etc) and human activities (think quarries, road cuts, etc). We’ll drive out to near Monterey to explore a few road cuts with sediments (and hopefully fossils!) from the early Devonian period (419-393 million years ago). I won’t put a ton of information on the site we’re going to here to preserve the integrity of it, but rest assured that the guidebook says we should find some cool stuff here.

No prior fossil searching or geologic experience is required for this trip! Just bring yourself and what’s listed below and we’ll have a good time. If you do have some neat fossil or geologic knowledge to impart upon the group it would be most welcomed.

**You should bring:
– hydration: one water bottle should suffice
– food: lunch/snacks
– clothes: layers, rain coat. Current forecast is partly sunny with a high of 51 degrees and we won’t be super active; dress so you’ll be warm with minimal movement and prepare for a potential rain shower or two
– shoes that provide stable footing if you might want to climb up a bit
– hammer/chisels/pick if you have such tools
– perhaps a small bag or container for your finds
– perhaps a backpack to contain your belongings

**Additionally, I’ll bring:
– First aid kit
– Prospector’s pick
– Guide book

**Approximate time plan:
10am SUNDAY – meet up
12pm – arrive
12-4 – searching, exploring, lunch, etc
4pm – head back
6pm – home sweet home

***Driver(s) needed! I don’t have a car, so this trip can’t happen without a driver – drivers get priority off the waitlist and gas reimbursement + 50% tip! Please arrive with a full tank of gas.***
