Have you ever seen those green tennis ball looking fruits on the ground during the fall? Those are black walnuts and they are edible! There are a couple black walnut trees on grounds, but I was at Lickinghole Creek this Wednesday and saw 20 trees with lots of nuts so we will have plenty to forage! We will collect the fruit off the ground and then process the nuts when we are done foraging.
The walnut hulls are juicy and stain EVERYTHING, so please bring rubber gloves so your hands don’t get stained when we remove the hulls. After removing the hulls, the nuts need to be washed and then dried for 1-2 weeks which you can do at home.
Here is a detailed guide on the harvesting process from start to finish: https://unrulygardening.com/harvesting-using-black-walnuts/
The plan:
12:00 pm – meet at Echols
12:20 – arrive at the creek and get those walnuts
2:10 – finish foraging and hulling the walnuts and drive back to Echols
2:30 – back at Echols
What to bring:
– rubber gloves!
– large container or bag to store the nuts
– boots to stomp the nuts (optional)
