Echols Dorm: Brick Wall By Side Door
Grayson Highlands State Park
Checked out of school already? Come spend a weekend bouldering in the Grayson Highlands!
Grayson Highlands (or if you are cool just “The Highlands”) is located in SW Virginia in Grayson Highlands State Park and has recently become a local bouldering hotspot in the southeast. Developing by a small group of motivated boulderers, over 400+ problems have been established ranging from V0 up to V12. It’s also insanely popular because of the surrounding views of the park and roaming wild ponies. This is your chance to crank on some of VA’s most impeccable exposed rock while overlooking breathtaking views of the valley (e.g. new facebook picture?). You can read more about it on Mountain Project: http://www.mountainproject.com/v/virginia/grayson_highlands_state_park/106477419
Grayson is about a 4.5hr drive from c-ville. In order to maximize time climbing, we will leave Thursday afternoon (around 3-4pm), arrive there around 9pm and set up camp for the night. If we are feeling daring, we may scope out the area and do some night-time bouldering via headlamps. We’ll then wake up bright and early on Friday and hit the main “Highlands Area” which has some classic lines in the V4-V6 range.
Saturday will be spent at a few of the smaller boulder clusters in the area. They are all within 1 mile of each other so super concentrated. (Rumor has it there may even be some “shallow water bouldering”… http://reelrocktour.com/watch/2010-finalists/queen-lines/)
We’ll head back Sunday morning to be back in the Ville by 3pm. Also, we can play the meals by ear depending on what everyone wants to do. More than one meal may be spent eating some burgers and fries at “The Log House” though.
*Max trip size set to about 5-6 people due to the nature of this trip. Leaving and return times are somewhat flexible (hours not days). Trip is also subject to weather and may be rescheduled to another weekend if it rains.
