Corner Of Echols Dorm
Mcafee Knob TrailHead, Catawba Valley Drive, Catawba, VA, USA
To my friends who don’t have cool fall break plans like Adam and I:
Welcome. Our plan is simple yet awesome. Hike McAfee Knob and cross it off our bucket list.
The weather forecast for this whole weekend is not looking great (literally like 99% chance of rain all day) but nevertheless we will embrace the rain and have the time of our lives. This is an 8-mile out and back hike that is generally considered “moderately challenging”. That being said, I have heard of 4 year olds doing this hike. I would like to keep our pace fairly quick, so please make sure you feel comfortable hiking at a decent speed (we will be be careful, I know it is rainy). It is pretty much uphill the whole way there and downhill the whole way back, but we will take plenty of small breaks and enjoy snacks/lunch at the top. I gave us around 4 hours to do the whole hike + breaks and lunch/snacks at the top, so hopefully that will be enough time to enjoy the beautiful views at the top, but we will play it by ear and bathe in the valley views to our hearts content.
Here’s the rundown:
7:55am- Meet at Corner of Echols (pls don’t be late)
8am – Start drivin’
10am – Arrive at trailhead and start our fun hike
2pm – Finish hike and get back on the road
4pm – Get back to c’ville
Things you will need:
– At least 2 liters of water
– Comfy hiking shoes (preferably something waterproof)
– Lots of layers, it will be cold and rainy so dress appropriately
– An extra pair of socks
– Snacks/lunch
