Humpback rocks trailhead parking, Afton, VA, USA
On the last weekend before Fall Break, I planned a trip to Humpback, only for the entirety of the Blue Ridge Parkway to be closed. We ended up making a last-minute change and headed to Shenandoah instead, but now, with the parkway reopened in Virginia, I’m back for redemption. There will be no stopping us this time (hopefully).
According to AllTrails, the hike is a 4.2 mile loop with a little more than 1,000 feet of elevation gain, so nothing too crazy, but do come prepared for a steep climb at the start.
Also, Explore Fall’s foliage map estimates that the trees around Humpback will be at “high color” (very close to peak) on the 19th if you need any more incentive to come!
Very general timeline:
11:00 AM: meet and depart from Echols
11:45: arrive at trailhead
12:45 PM: arrive at humpback rocks
1:15: leave viewpoint area
2:45: back at trailhead
3:30: back at echols
Unfortunately I do not have a car so drivers are needed! If you have a car you will get priority and will also be eligible for gas reimbursement if you arrive at Echols with a full tank of gas. I will add more people to this trip if we get multiple drivers.
You bring:
– Hiking shoes/boots
– Plenty of water (better to bring too much than not enough)
– Snacks/lunch
– Bug spray if you want
– Layers, potentially: the forecast is calling for the low 70s but I’m also writing this a week out so that is subject to change
– A bag
I bring:
– First aid kit
