Humpback Rocks Sunset Hike

OVERVIEW

Come join me for an evening hike up to the Humpback Rocks,
six miles south on the Blue Ridge Parkway from Rockfish Gap. It is a good spot from which to watch the sun set over a superb view of the Shenandoah Valley. The Wednesday evening has the best forecast next week for the sun set watching.

We will reach the rock outcropping at an elevation of 3,080 feet,
after a steep 1-mile hike with an elevation gain of ~720 feet.
(You will get sweaty!)

The temp will be slightly cooler than in Charlottesville – around 30 deg.
What to bring/wear: Wear non-cotton clothing and bring LAYERS!
I will be wearing hat & gloves most likely! You can also bring
a blanket and/or sleeping bag to keep you more comfortable up at the top.

We will hang out at the top for a little while – I usually bring and
eat my dinner (hot and spicy chili!) at the top. I will also have some
hot coffee, tea and hot chocolate (bring a cup if you want some) and I
can boil more water or warm up your meal.

Around 6:30PM we will hike back down in the twilight, so BRING *A FLASHLIGHT or HEADLAMP* (MANDATORY!, but I will have some spare ones.)

We will meet at Bonnycastle Circle at 4:10PM circle to carpool. I am limiting the trip size to 4 persons until the additional drivers sign up
(the club pays gas plus an extra 30%).

P.S. From time to time, after snow/freezing rain/high winds, the
Parkway might be closed. I will monitor the NPS website and, if on the
Wednesday morning, the BRP happens to be closed, I’ll email everybody
who joined and cancel the hike ;8-( Currently, the road is open:
