OVERVIEW

What better way to start 2007 than with a little paddling? We’ll wish a happy new year to the James with either a run down Balcony Falls or through downtown Richmond (depends on water levels), or perhaps even the Maury if we get enough rain on Friday. I’m leaning toward Balcony since the levels look good no matter the weather, and it has been ages since I’ve been. Its a great spot for intermediates to work on skills, and a great intro to cold water paddling. No beginners please since the water is a bit chilly for anyone without a decent roll. The forecast looks absurd with highs in the lower 70s (good God!), but the water will be cold so please dress appropriately. No cotton in the layers you should bring, that you can wear under one of the club’s wetsuits. Its best if you have a dry top, but not necessary. Be sure to pack a lunch to eat on the river. Email or call me if you have questions: dclark@virginia.edu; (434) 962-9737.

We’ll meet at the Crossroads Store in North Garden, VA (just south of town; see link for directions) bright and early. I’ll change the meeting location if I change the adventure location, but will let you know by Friday night. Total driving time including shuttle is ~4 hours, total time on the river will be ~3 hours (including lunch on the rock above Balcony Falls).

The Club provides: boat, skirt, paddle, pfd, helmet, nose plug, dry bag, float bags, wetsuit, splash jacket, boat transport

You should bring: Layers of warm fuzzy clothes (NO cotton!), snacks, water, pack a lunch, money for food
