OVERVIEW

Extra hour of daylight = extra hour to kayak! Now we can start kayaking during the week…after work (for me that is, silly undergrads 🙂 and as long as we get enough rain to keep the water up & run-able. Lets paddle the downtown section of the James through Richmond and end with some drinks and apps at Legends (local brewery, great stuff!) “Drinks” we can define later, depending on whether you’re over 21. At current water level this section of the James is suitable for intermediates-advanced paddlers. There are mostly class 3 rapids with 1 class 4, which we’ll scout and then I’ll guide you through. DO NOT SIGN UP UNLESS YOU’VE AT LEAST PADDLED CLASS 3 RAPIDS. It really helps, but you don’t need to have a solid roll to join, but you need to be confident with your paddling and should be prepared to swim. If you are unsure if you are qualified, sign up anyway and contact me. 760-2739…..Legends is a great post paddling experience and is just down the way from the takeout (by car, of course). They have excellent wings, sometimes have good blue grass bands, and make a fine brew (which you can enjoy only if you are 21 or over, of course 🙂

Outdoors at UVA provides: All the gear, including wetsuits and splash jackets, except footwear. Gas $$. ~1/2 of food cost.

You should bring: swimwear, footwear that can get wet (aqua socks, sandles, old sneakers), water (there is a water-bottle-holder-place in the boats), snacks, $$ for dinner, ID if you’re 21 or over, towel, sunscreen, warm, dry clothes to change into after paddling
