OVERVIEW

Looking for a way to spend Fall Break this year? Mount Rogers is the highest peak in Virginia, and we’ll be taking in the gorgeous views as we hike to the top. The area offers great opportunities for some creek splashing, bouldering, and wildlife sighting. You might get to hold a black and gold salamander, or perhaps even kiss one of the many wild ponies that roam free…

We’ll leave Saturday morning and drive about 4.5 hours to South West Virginia. Then we’ll hike a moderately strenuous hike of about 6 miles to Thomas Knob shelter where we will set up camp for the night. Sunday we will hike about 7-8 miles to a shelter along Pine Ridge Trail. Monday morning will be a quick hike of about 3 miles to the car, and we’ll get some lunch before heading back to Charlottesville.

You should bring:
Backpack
Sleeping bag
Sleeping pad
Comfy clothes for car ride (to leave for when you get back)
Hiking boots / Socks / liners
Hiking pants / shorts
Hiking shirt / camp shirt (avoid cotton)
THERMAL UNDERWEAR
Bathing suit (never thought you’d see both of those things on the same checklist, did you?)
Clean change of regular underwear
Warm clothes – Fleece and long sleeves
Rain gear
Warm hat / beenie
Head lamp or flashlight
2 Nalgenes, or ability to hold 60oz. of water
Toiletries (sunscreen, toothbrush, paste, etc.)
Any personal snacks / energy bars you like
Money for some food on the road (2 lunches)
Energy, sense of humor, etc.

Club will provide:
5 meals
S’mores
Gas Money
Sleeping bags and/or pads, backpacks for those who need them

If you need to check out gear, we will meet Friday night at 7:00 PM at Echols dorm where the gear room is. If you can’t make this time but need gear, e-mail the officers (outdoors-officers@virginia.edu) to set up a time.

Please be on time on Saturday morning; we need to pack up and head out as soon as possible so we aren’t setting up camp in the dark!
