Intermediate Climbing at the New!

OVERVIEW

Third time’s the charm…hopefully…! This is the third time I’ve tried doing a climbing trip to the New River Gorge with the club. Weather has thwarted both previous attempts. Regardless, it will be a fun weekend of climbing!

The plan is to leave from Bonnycastle Circle on Friday at 6pm and come back to UVA on Sunday after a solid day of climbing. We will stay at the American Alpine Club Campground, which is a short hike to one of the crags we will climb at, the Junkyard Wall. We will also head to Bridge Buttress and the Endless Wall to explore the stellar trad climbing at the New!

I will provide all the group climbing gear (protection, ropes, draws,…), but please bring your own personal climbing gear. I will also provide the tents, a stove, and a basic cook set for your use.

Since this is an intermediate trip, please be able to climb at least 5.8 on tope rope and know how to tope rope belay.

What you need to bring:
-Climbing shoes
-Climbing harness
-Climbing helmet
-Belay device
-Food/money for food
-Water (at least 2 liters)
-Camping gear (sleeping bag/pad, dishes, headlamp, etc…)
-Rain gear

What the Club Provides:
-Camping fees
-Gas
-Gear, if you need it (go to a gear room this week)
