Intermediate Rock Scrambling at Devil’s Marbleyard

OVERVIEW

So you’ve held a rock before. Maybe you’ve even rock climbed before. You’re not enticed enough to start licking rocks so you’re not a geology major, but that lingering feeling that you need to go hands on with your hike is shining through your heart and today might just be the first time you’re hearing about the grandpa of all rock scrambles: Devil’s Marbleyard. This 4 mile hike features an eight acre rock slide, hundreds of millions of years in the making. If you’re like me: mildly injured, eager for something between hiking and bouldering, come join me on my ascent of this bizarre looking scramble.

Please consider that this rock climb will likely have easier, and tougher routes through the boulders. There may be challenging portions of the ascent, but overall this trip is beginner-friendly.

WHAT TO BRING: A bottle of water, hiking shoes that wont slip on rocks, lunch.
WHAT I BRING: First aid kit, extra water

HERE’S THE PLAN:
7:30AM depart from the Corner of Echols
9:00AM arrive at Devil’s Marbleyard Parking Lot (aka Belfast Trail Parking lot, 37.5712700, -79.4915600)
9:00AM-10:30AM hike up Belfast Trail & scramble Devil’s Marbleyard (finish NLT 11:30)
10:30AM-11:15AM views & lunch (finish NLT 12:00)
11:15AM-1:45PM descend back to parking lot (finish NLT 2:30)
Arriving back to Charlottesville No Later Than 5:00PM

LOGISTICS:
Drivers will receive waitlist priority, gas reimbursed plus tip up to $20. The bottleneck for how many people I can bring on a trip tends to be how many drivers join. This trip may have limited parking lot space, but street parking will be available.
