OVERVIEW

FINALLY, we have rain! And lots of it. All of the local rivers were so low, that even all of this rain hasn’t done much yet. Richmond is almost up to a runnable level and Balcony Falls is climbing fast, but the Maurey, Tye, and Piney haven’t jumped much yet. As of now the plan is to hit the “downtown” Richmond section of the James, which should be up to a decent level by tomorrow. However, the plans could change at the last minute. I’d really love to get on the Maurey, or would settle for Balcony Falls – both are excellent river trips and are even better with the fall foliage. If we really get dumped on today and tonight, our local Moormans River might be an option – its a great intro to creeking run from Sugar Hollow down to Millington Bridge. Because the trip could change at last minute, so might who I allow to go. For now it will be for intermediates paddlers (at least), meaning you should have a solid flat water roll and plenty of class 3 paddling experience. If Richmond flashes up to 8 feet or so, or we run the Maurey or something with comparable difficulty, I’ll require that you have a solid combat roll and class 4 rapid experience. Sign up if you are qualified, and I’ll make the call in the morning. Check you email. We’ll leave early, and get back at a decent hour. I can expand the trip depending on who signs up. The club has all of the essentials plus wetsuits and splash jackets if you want them. Please bring along some water, snacks, and money for eats after the trip. Call or email me if you are not sure of your qualifications. (434) 962-9737 or dclark@virginia.edu.
